One useful thing: VG-10 and why it behaves the way it does
VG-10 is a Japanese stainless with about 1% carbon and 15% chromium, plus a little cobalt and vanadium. What that adds up to in the pocket: it takes a very fine edge, it holds that edge well through cardboard and rope, and it resists rust better than most steels people fuss over.
The catch is that VG-10 is a touch brittle at the very apex. If you’re prying with the tip or batoning, you’ll chip it — not because it’s soft, but because it’s hard and fine-grained. Treat it as a slicer and it’ll outlast you.
Sharpening: it responds beautifully to a strop. Most people reach for a stone when what the edge actually needs is fifteen passes on leather with a little compound. Save the stone for when the edge stops biting entirely.
